Universal Drumming and doumbek classes are taught by Alex Spurkel who has 18 years experience with both western and non-western drumming traditions. He has studied Middle-Eastern, African, Celtic and Indian percussion and has learned from master drummers such as Souhail Kaspar (Arabic Doumbek) and Francis Awe (Nigirian talking drum). For many years he toured and recorded as a world / electronic drummer with Electric Skychurch and has been a steady resident with the Shaman's Dream World Groove ensemble in Los Angeles. His latest project is called Naked Rhythm which is a unique and exotic blend of world music, electronica, and blistering live percussion!

Alex is a clear and insightful instructor that is able to draw from many traditions and easily share his insights with others. His warm and personable approach allows him to effectively teach any person how to feel the rhythm and excel in the beautiful art of drumming.
